“Parents and guardians in the Katavi region have been urged to break the cultural taboo of not discussing menstruation and growth changes with their daughters. This is to help girls avoid the negative consequences that can arise from a lack of knowledge and support during their menstrual periods.”
The call was made by Beatrice Kingu, a project officer from Girls Serve Tanzania (GST), during her visit to Kapalangao and Usimbili Secondary Schools to distribute sanitary pads as part of World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrations.
She emphasized the need for Tanzanian parents and guardians to openly discuss menstruation with their daughters to help them manage this natural process safely. Research shows that girls often miss school during their periods due to inadequate facilities.
GST’s initiative aims to address this issue by providing sanitary pads and advocating for better school infrastructure.
